Ryan Johnson is Anti-Women – Part I

Don’t watch Ryan Johnson’s movies, they are bad in general and anti-women specifically. I have watched 3 Ryan Johnson movies, Brick, Looper, and The Last Jedi and this guy is a bad writer, a bad director, and misogynist. His reputation was “He writes amazingly fierce and independent women”, yet every female character except one is either needlessly violent, a plot device, or dies to motivate the hero. Let’s count them out:

Brick:

I can’t tell if any of these humanoid sausages moving and making noises on the screen have a character on not, the high-school noir style is so thick that it’s incomprehensible, so let’s just look at what happens:

· Emily Kostich (Emilie de Ravin), the ex-girlfriend of Josef Gordon-Levitt, is a junkie who dies to motivate him and get the movie started.

· Laura Dannon (Nora Zehetner), dated a thug to manipulate him as muscle, knew Emily was pregnant, framed her, caused her death, tells Josef Gordon-Levitt Emily was pregnant, and that the child was his. An extraordinarily evil bitch.

· Kara (Meagan Good) is another ex-girlfriend of Josef Gordon-Levitt, a Femme Fatal man-eater, introduced with a man literally bowing at her feet. She keeps trying to make Josef Gordon-Levitt fall under her spell once more. She has caused the death of another character and she is happy about it.

Movie Talley: One Woman In Refrigerator and two murderous Super Bitches. Not a good start Rian.

Looper:

There are 4 named characters in the movie. The first women we see are strippers with their tits out, and it gets worse from there:

· Suzie (Piper Perabo), Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s girlfriend is a prostitute with her tits out.

· Bruce Willis’ Wife (Qing Xu) dies to motivate him and get the movie started (and violates the entire premise of the movie that “It’s nearly impossible to dispose of a body in the future” as fire seems to work pretty well to conceal her murder).

· Sara (Emily Blunt) the rain maker’s mother dies and motivates the rainmaker in the original timeline of the movie before Joseph Gordon-Levitt changes the timeline. She doesn’t die in the movie and she is an actual character with problems and depth and challenges. This is a nice subversion of the Women In Refrigerators trope, nice job Rian, the rest of the movie is still shit that fails the Bechdel test.

· Beatrix (Tracie Thoms) is a waitress bringing food (I wouldn’t focus on her but she is a named female character in a movie overflowing with male characters).

Movie Tally: One Woman In Refrigerator, one prostitute, one woman bringing men their food and one real female character that is only half a Woman In Refrigerator (in the original timeline she dies to inspire the Rainmaker). You’re doing slightly better Roundhead, let’s see where you go from here.

P.S. The premise of the movie is really stupid. If you want to kill and dispose of bodies through time travel, gag them and send them to a furnace. That a very fast and easy way to do it. Or gag and send them to a car crusher in an abandoned scrap yard. It’s really good at ripping metal apart, I think it can make it through Jimmy from Long Island.

They are quietly dead and disposed of, you save a ton of money on loopers, there’s no risk of a looper spilling the beans to save themselves, easy-peasy, trash compactor squeezy. Also, it’s easier to time travel than to block a GPS tracker in someone’s ass? Last but not least, time travel in the hands of criminals is the equivalent of the mafia getting a nuclear weapon, something no government will allow. This movie requires you to turn off so much of your brain that it should count as a euthanasia device.
