Mr. Right (2015) – 4th best Star Wars movie – Part I

Mr. Right (2015) is the best Star Wars movie since The Return of the Jedi. It has no spaceships or lightsabers, but it does have a deep dive into the Force, or the Flow, by a Force master dance-killing with Force reflex and teaching how to do it. It also seems to dunk especially on the Disney Star Wards movies, which is curious as it came out before any of them.

The Heroine’s Journey

Mr. Right features two force masters at war, each of them with an apprentice, one light-side female, one dark-side whiny emo wannabee dude, heir to an evil empire. The masters duel it out while the young female apprentice finds her path in the teachings of the force to defeat the whiny emo wannabee with shoulder-length black hair. The movie even has a force-sensitive black henchman who defects to the side of the good guys and even saves the day in the end, making him better than Finn in The Force Awakens. In the end, evil is defeated, the female apprentice graduates, the force master and she are off to another adventure. Fun for the whole family, how can you mess with success? By smearing CGI explosions all over preachy lectures/nostalgia baits/mystery boxes. How do you do it right? Mr. Right.

We start with Sam Rockwell dance-killing a mercenary squad that was sent by Tim Roth. Roth previously trained Rockwell, Rockwell grew a conscience, wanted out, Roth now tries to get him back. Rockwell flees from the murder scene, picks up Anna Kendrick and they date while international hitmen are after them. So far so Mr. and Mrs. Smith, bullets over RomCom, love in the face of bang-bang. But throughout the movie Rockwell displays a slip-second pre-awareness of incoming attacks, moving out of the way of snipers, intercepting close-range weapons, a very Zen-like combat style of dancing, and predicting the flow of the fight.

And then at the 35 minutes, mark Rockwell flat out teaches Anna Kendrick and the audience how to use flow reflex to predict and evade any incoming attacks.

Flow Reflex

Rockwell sums up Flow Reflex in 3 rules:

1. The world is like an ocean, there is a sweeping current moving everything (that would be the “will of the force”) and you can feel it.

2. When something moves in the world it can move either with or against the current. If it moves against the current, you can feel it and where it’s going, predicting incoming attacks.

3. It’s easier to go with the flow instead of against it. This means that when someone is attacking you the flow will move you away from the attack, like the waves from the boat pushing other objects on the ocean away.

This is how a Jedi evades, they allow the flow to push them away from incoming attacks. “A Jedi uses the Force for knowledge and defense, never for attack,” A Sith uses the flow that they create in attacking to force the opponent to defend themselves, closing avenues of escape until victory.

Flow Sensitivity

So why isn’t every chill guy a bad-ass Zen master? Two pre-conditions:

· You must be born with flow-sensitivity (Kendrick wanted as a child a career as a T-Rex).

· You need brain damage (by the end of the movie Kendrick sustains that as well).

This power requires to be born with flow-sensitive and then transcendence from the normal. It a liberation of the mind through Zen until you are destroyed and reborn from the ashes. Flow-sensitive individuals are outside of events, in a world of their own, where they can look at things however they want. They even manifest this uniqueness with visual aids, like a clown nose and cat ears. They accept the flow of the world and their place in it, fearless.
